The geography, precisely
Belmont occupies a peninsula. The Catawba River runs down its eastern side and forms the Gaston–Mecklenburg county line. Lake Wylie — the Catawba impoundment created by Duke Energy's Wylie Dam — wraps the southern end. The South Fork Catawba River comes down the western side and joins the main stem below town. Water on three sides, I-85 across the fourth.
The town center sits at roughly 35.2429° N, 81.0373° W, about 660 feet above sea level, in the rolling Piedmont between the Charlotte basin and the Kings Mountain ridge. Nothing here is mountainous despite the name — Belmont comes from the Latin bellus mons, "beautiful mountain," chosen by the Benedictine abbot in 1886, not from the topography.

What Belmont is not
It is not Belmont, Massachusetts, and it is not the Belmont neighborhood in Charlotte proper — a distinct area northeast of Uptown that shares only the name. Search results routinely blend the three; if a listing or article references Mecklenburg County, CMS schools, or a 282xx ZIP other than 28012, it is not this Belmont.
It is also not Lake Wylie, South Carolina. Lake Wylie is a lake that both states touch and also an unincorporated South Carolina community in York County. Belmont's waterfront is the North Carolina side, in Gaston County, under North Carolina tax and school rules.
And it is not McAdenville, the mill village eight minutes west that becomes Christmas Town USA every December. Belmont residents treat it as an extension of town. The postal address, the tax bill, and the town council do not.

Why is it called Belmont?

The settlement was originally Garibaldi Station, named for a railroad engineer on the Atlanta & Richmond Air Line. Abbot Leo Haid of the new Benedictine monastery petitioned for a change, and in 1886 the town became Belmont — from the Latin bellus mons, 'beautiful mountain,' a nod to nearby Spencer Mountain. The city incorporated in 1895.
