Median rent has been running around $2,100 a month, and the combined property tax rate about $1.054 per $100 assessed.
North Carolina has a flat state income tax and a state-plus-local sales tax; there is no vehicle personal property tax bill separate from registration because the two are combined. If you are arriving from a no-income-tax state, model the difference before you set your housing budget.
The hidden costs specific to Belmont: two cars in most of the town, HOA dues in the gated and newer communities, boat and slip costs if the lake is why you came, and renovation reserves if you buy in the mill blocks.

Week 4 — get on the water
Walk Seven Oaks Preserve, launch a kayak at Loftin Riverfront Park, or ride Rocky Branch. This is the part of Belmont people move here for and then forget to use.
Month 2 — the calendar
Find the farmers market, the Friday Night Live schedule, and whichever festival is next. Consider a Conservancy membership if you are within fifteen minutes — it pays back in three visits.
Month 3 — the long view
If you bought in the older blocks, get a contractor's assessment of what needs doing and in what order. If you bought new, use your first-year warranty window deliberately rather than at month eleven.
